Synchronized Aerobics In Dance - 735 Words

I ended up being in NYC for a professional conference during the last weekend of ABTs NY run at the Koch Theatre at Lincoln Center. My wife and I bit the bullet and purchased 2 last-minute tickets to see the performance on the evening of Friday, October 27, even if it included the new Millepied. Or should I make that plural - two Millepieds, if we count the intermission synchronized aerobics by JKO students and ABT Studio dancers ? The ballets on the main program included two Ratmanskys (the new Songs of Bukovina and relatively-new Serenade on Platos Symposium), one well-known Robbins work (Other Dances) and the new Millepied (I Feel the Earth Move). Hate to report that my/our instincts were correct with the Millepied which may†¦show more content†¦Ive seen better performances of Robbins Other Dances throughout the years but Isabella Boylston and Cory Stearns were still lovely, performing with great musical sensitivity. The staging, by former POB etoile Isabelle Guerin, ensured correct phrasing and spirit. The lad, Cory Stearns, danced with elegance and more facial excitement than Ive seen from him in a while. Isabella Boylston truly floated in her slow mazurka variation, displaying a grand range of emotions and sensitivity, be it slapping the floor or waving her arms in lyrical port de bras. Delicious! The timing of the high lift-into-quick-drop in the mazurka coda (music made famous in Les Sylphides jete variation) was on the money. Exhilarating! And finally to Ratmanskys Serenade on Platos Symposium, to Bernstein piece for full orchestra and solo violin (yes, we finally had an entire orchestra in the pit with the final ballet of the night). I see why most balletomanes love this clever, intellectual piece for seven solo males and one female who appears in one of the last movements but...not exactly something for the general paying public. (If ABT only presented ballets like Plato, it would become bankrupted very quickly.) Like Bukovina, it is a Ratmansky ballet to be seen many times to be truly appreciated, savouring every clever solo. The end product pyruvate, from glycolysis, is anabolized to lactic acid when there is a need for energy without an adequate supply of oxygen available. Minimum Wage Legislation Essay Example For Students

Minimum Wage Legislation Essay I am going to pose the question to you the students of Sir Sandford Fleming College, do you really want the Minimum Wage Legislation Essay left in affect? As college students you are not benefiting or gaining anything from minimum wage legislation. The minimum wage legislation requires all employees to be paid at least some fixed given dollar amount per hour. This sounds good, but it isnt all that it seems! Minimum wage is an example of government intervention. The government has put a minimum on the dollar amount that employers can pay their employees. Unfortunately when we implement solutions like the minimum wage, it is too late to actually fix the problem, so in most cases it has effects that we cannot foresee as it is a reaction instead of a prevention method. Minimum wage actually helps very few people. The only ones that benefit from minimum wage are those unskilled workers who are currently employed. Minimum wage restricts employment opportunities for the young, unexperienced, and those people with educational disadvantages. They will continue to find themselves handicapped in the job market as long as the minimum wage legislation remains in affect. In society today the demand for unskilled workers is low and the supply is high, therefore there is a surplus of unskilled workers in the job market. The effect of a surplus drives down an individuals reservation wage, as they are willing to do and take anything for work. Minimum wage is an example of government intervention. Minimum wage restricts employment opportunities for the young, unexperienced, and those people with educational disadvantages. They will continue to find themselves handicapped in the job market as long as the minimum wage legislation remains in affect. In society today the demand for ;unskilled; workers is low and the supply is high, therefore there is a surplus of unskilled workers in the job market. The effect of a surplus drives down an individuals reservation wage, as they are willing to do and take anything for work. Minimum wage only makes this fact more severe, as it increases the supply of workers. Minimum wage increases the cost of doing business, and unfortunately in todays economic conditions employers are not able to pass on the extra costs to the consumer. Minimum wage is not helping workers, it is hurting businesses, and to maintain any profit, and follow legislation companies have to cut labour costs somehow. Companies are being forced to take other alternatives because of higher labour costs for unskilled workers. Businesses are forced to: 1. Cut back current employees hours 2. Not hire any more employees 3. Let employees go As you can see the reactions to minimum wage actually decrease opportunities for the unskilled workers, instead of providing them. With any change in the in the minimum wage the demand will decrease/increase dramatically, and exactly the opposite for skilled workers. When the minimum wage changes the demand for skilled workers remains the same regardless, but if there is a change it is very minute. Overall the amount of job opportunities are decreasing, because of the costs of labour is increasing for the unskilled worker, and it will be the unskilled workers who are the first to go in these situations because they do not have the specialized skills that make them irreplaceable. Wages are used to compensate workers for their time, skill, and money that they have invested into themselves. The trend is for higher education, which in return receives higher wages. The reservation wage of skilled workers is higher then unskilled because they would like to receive some return on their investment, their education. As college students we should be able to relate to this concept as we have put more time, effort and money in to ourselves then some others, like high school students and we should be compensated for this by of course a better rate of pay. After one year of college you should receive more then minimum wage as you have bettered your skills and invested at least $3000 to do so. This is the only direct cost, you also have to take into consideration the opportunity costs you would have. The opportunity costs for a college student is the wages you could have been earning instead of attending school as well as the time you could be travelling or starting a family, or whatever you gave up to go to college, and you want to be compensated for them. My Family and a Better Life EssayWe would like to encourage more people into getting a better education, but unfortunately minimum wage is working against us. The opportunity costs for some people to attend college seems to high, so if we decreased minimum wage maybe more people would attend college. This would help out people individually as well as society, it would actually spread out the supply of labour a bit more, and turn decrease the level of unemployment and poverty. Wages are compensation for your skills, effort, responsibility, and working conditions, and they should be rated and fluctuated by these categories. Unfortunately minimum wage disregards all of this. Regardless of your education, skills, effort, .

A Decade Essays - Simile, Free Essays, Term Papers, Research Papers

A Decade Essays - Simile, Free Essays, Term Papers, Research Papers A Decade Upon first reading Amy Lowells poem A Decade appears to be a poem about a couple who has met each other and saying how sweet they are like honey and red wine Then it says you are fresh like morning bread. Then ending with how they become completely nourished. After reading this poem several times it becomes clear that a message exists in this poem. The message says that passion may decrease in a long-term relationship, but love still goes on in the relationship. Devices that help this message become true are similes, hyperbole, white space and symbolism. There are two similes in the poem. The first one states that When you came you were like red wine and honey. This means they were sweet and there was a lot of passion in the beginning. The second simile says that Now you are like morning bread. This is suppose to mean your passion is gone, but there is still love in the relationship. Symbolism of the title is another device use to describe this message. A Decade means that the couple has been together for ten years and they love each other a lot. Hyperbole is the third device used to describe this poem. When they say The taste of you burnt my mouth with is sweetness. How can something be so sweet that it will burn their mouths very badly? The last device is white space. If you turn you book so that the lines are vertical you can see a pattern. The line starts and rises, then it decreases and decreases, then it goes a little up and then back down. This describes the passion that was in their relationship. The poet wrote this poem to show new couples what might happen, if they do get in a major relationship with someone.

Decision Making Essay

Decision Making Essay Decision Making Essay Monica Washington Lisa Wright Human Relations 03-23-2013 Short paper: Work stress "Workplace stress" is the harmful physical and emotional responses that can happen when there is a conflict between job demands on the employee and the amount of control an employee has over meeting these demands. Work stress is the major cause of stress for many people who are working in the workplace. Work stress is something that is a serious impact on our behavior and is the cause of stress that contributes to employees’ stress in the organizations today. This type of stress can be very emotional to the employees and employers. According to Jeanne Segal, Ph.D., Melinda Smith, M.A., Lawrence Robinson, and Robert Segal, M.A. (December 2012),†Your emotions are contagious, and stress has an impact on the quality of your interactions with others†. I agree with that statement, because when you are stressed your emotions get caught up with the fact that you are stressed and you start to take your emotions out on other things and also the people that work around you. Stress is a part of our everyday lifestyle no matter if it’s social or work related and can become very harmful. Harmful work stress is known to be associated with the demand of the job, uncomfortable with the job environment and lack of communication with the employees and the employer. Even though we as employees can’t control the amount of stress in the workplace, but we can try to found ways to manage the workplace stress. I feel the employers should do things like, talk to the employees about what might make them feel stress at the workplace and provide some training to maintain employees’ skills. Employees should also suggest something to the employer to reduce the stress in the workplace. I feel some of the things we can do is to tell the employer of some of the stress that we are experiencing, the

Taking FYC TO The Next Level - Essay Example Numerous companies usually utilise the intranet however they do not make complete utilisation of the intranet and this is mainly due to the reason that it does not work in sync with the objectives of the company (Kennedy & Dysart, 2007). An extranet has been defined as, ‘An extranet is a private network that uses Internet technology and the public telecommunication system to securely share part of a businesss information or operations with suppliers, vendors, partners, customers, or other businesses’ (Search Enterprise, 2009). The company has two types of customers, i.e. retail and wholesale. The company can use the extranet for the wholesale customers. The customers can be provided with complete access to the extranet where they can also make orders and keep the company updated with the requirements online. The extranet can also be used as a reorder system where inventory can be reordered automatically (Kennedy & Dysart, 2007). The company should also allow each store to log into the system and share their details of the existing stocks, the trend of sales, exchange documents and make comments. FYC can use the extranet and intranet for several different purposes which include a wide range like the production processes, sourcing and supply chain departments, operations and admin teams, human resources team and the customer service teams. The customer service team can use these as a faster mode to respond to customer queries and to assist customers in a more effective manner. In terms of the sourcing and the supply departments the company can use the extranet to communicate the needs for the raw materials, and all the procurement processes. In terms of the human resources teams the company can use the system to create a centralised system which will allow the company to ensure a complete balance and also a centralised payroll for all stores which will help the finance teams directly as it will be effective and easier for the invoice creation

Educational Issues and Special Educational Needs Essay - 1

Educational Issues and Special Educational Needs - Essay Example the Act key intent was to help the all the children including those with special educational needs to achieve five outcomes which matter most to them, their parents as well as their carers (The Children Act 2004) These outcomes were; staying safe, being healthy, achieving and enjoying, making positive contributions to the society and also the economic and social wellbeing of the children. The Every Child Matters Children Act 2004 has had a great impact in the lives of the children especially those children who have various special educational needs. This Act has led to the promotion of the equality and the opportunities for the children who have special needs in education. This has enabled majority of these children with special needs to be treated equally as the other normal children and they are not alienated by the educational system because of their disabilities. (The Children Act 2004) Similarly these children receive equal treatment as the rest of the children who do not have any learning disabilities. On the other hand the Act has led to the creation of a lot of changes locally as well as internationally and also various programs have been instigated and this has led to the improvement of the of the outcomes for the disabled children. The Act has had major policy priorities which are very relevant to the children with special educational needs and this enables them to receive fair and equal treatment in all their educational learning processes.
